USB 3.0

Earlier this quarter Intel announced the release of USB 3.0 with a throughput over 4Gbps (300MBps). I am really grad to hear this! As the flash card capacity is not reaching 16GB the current USB2.0 is way too slow. This is good news! Read more...

Free tool to Sync your files

Sync'g files between computers is always a pain. I just did my weekly sync between my desktop and my notebook. The tool I use is the free tool from Microsoft called the SyncToy. This is a reasonable tool that works. I like the easy installation and user interface and its FREE! Common sync/backup tasks can be performed just by a few clicks.

Altec Lansing M604 Powered Audio System for Zune

I recently got this great deal at Buy.com on this item - $49! So I went for it as I was interested in one after I got my 30GB Zune. Overall the unit is just OK! The sound quality is good but its a bit bulky and there are some flaws in the design.

Pro's:
  • Excellent sound quality
  • Easy installation
  • Support for generic mp3 players
Cons:
  • Cheap LED indicators
  • Couldn't turn off the Zune while in the dock
  • In order to switch to AUX, Zune should be undocked
  • Bulky when compared to the iPod model. (I have both). The iPod model is portable!

Image editing tool for free!!

GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program - is one of the best free software you can download. This software can be used for photo retouching, image composition, image creation and more!

One of the noticeable features on GIMP is its ability to add plug-ins. There are several of these plug-ins available at the registry site within the GIMP's home page.

Replacing your desktop with a 17inch notebook

I was always been reluctant to get rid of my desktop and replace it with a notebook, until I got my Gateway MX8711 - 17inch notebook that I bought from Circuit City for $799 after $100 mail-in rebate. Once of the key things I liked about this notebook was the full keyboard. I thought that was a great deal last February when I bought mine. This afternoon I was browsing and came across these amazing deals at Circuit City - a Toshiba 17 inch notebook for $619 - wow!

The only thing I would recommend is upgrading the memory of these babies to at least 2GB. Mine works great with 2GB (eBay $60 approx.) . Also these 17 inch notebooks need bigger carrying cases and they are bit on the heavier side.

Encrypting data on your desktop and flash drive for free

Here is a software (open-source) which is free to download (see license for details) - TrueCruypt. This software allows you to encrypt the data in a folder or file in your desktop. Couple of really cool features that I like about this software are
  • It can create a virtual disk in your computer that is encrypted. This disk will be visible to software running on your computer as a regular disk
  • This could be used to encrypt data in your USB flash drive.
  • and ITS FREE!!!

Adobe's aim at online office

Recently I came across buzzword (http://www.buzzword.com) - Adobe's flash based word processor. So in order to use this world processor all you need is your browser with Adobe Flash installed. Interesting isnt it? I know Google also has a product similar to this. I'll spent some time later evaluating what Google has to offer.

I have to say I my first impression on buzzword was great! Of course I have use it on a daily basis to see how it works out.

Buzzword represents the new trend of online workspace. Most of the products available now are in their infancy, but once matured this will be a good cost effective way to small businesses to have a web-centric workspace.

Lately if you look around for a camcorder or digital camera you cannot miss these new generation of devices that are "made for" YouTube. These are very compact, less expensive camcorders and digital camera that will make your life easier when it comes to taking videos and posting them in YouTube.

Windows Vista SideShow

SideShow is a secondary display available in some select notebooks that run the new Windows Vista. This display allows the notebook user to play MP3s, read emails, check calendar, maps etc without really opening and starting the notebook. Sounds like a great idea, but I could find this feature only in some high-end notebooks. This feature so far seems to be in its infancy. I like it as it allows me to listen to my songs without opening my notebook. Great for travel, no need to carry yet another widget along!

Here are couple for links for further reading:

USB Drive?? or is it a Card-Reader

I was googling around for a compact card-reader and look what I found:

MobileLite 9-in-1 Reader - This device is a USB drive, but not really! Its actually a card-reader disguised as a USB drive (or the other way around!!). Doesnt matter how you see it, this device is cool! There are 3 slots in this tiny reader and hook up with your PC and you can read from write contents to a SD Card, Mini SD and/or Micro SD. Yes it can hold all three at the same time! Wow great idea!
